Anyone got Dawn of War and Winter Assault? Wanting to get back into my RTS whooping self (still going to pwn at css though). If anyone's got it i'd love for a couple 1v1s or more...

Finally went out and bought them - after some 'long term borrowing' but without any multiplayer outside of the VPN with dex i wanted to get into it proper. Anyone?

watch Star Trek more man, Dawn of War: winter assault sponsors it :) ....

anyway, Dawn of War is only about £14 or something so i might get it. but that's a pretty unlikely "might" since i plan on getting WoW and have absolutely no cash atm :bigcry:

(macs don't let me edit posts  )

What is Dawn of War like?

Is it anything like the actual game of Warhammer 40k?

Can you use all armies?

can you use all the wargear/troops that are available in the codicies?

is it turn based or real time?

You've never played DoW have you reused? But you clearly have played 40K and some of the older 40K games - which were dire.

Its a full RTS - VERY fast paced, faster than C&C or Starcraft. So thank god the turnbased stuff is out the window!

It is like 40K but not in a sense, since its realtime and they could only put so much into the game from a tabletop game thats run for over 14years. Think of 40K but in realtime and the mechanics of how you would get that to play - then you have DoW. (its also a lot cheaper)

Armies - In Dawn of War you got: Space Marines, Eldar, Orks and Chaos. In Winter Assault you also get the Imperial Guard (who are fast becoming my chosen race). Necrons also make a token apperance in the campaign but you don't get to play them, however they look awesome. A taster of the next DoW or expansion i think!

Equipment - well there's too much in the codex's to cover but there is alot of the wargear which appears as upgrades or abilites for your units (Frag nades, optical sights, bionics, rocket lauchers, plasma rifles etc). So like the game, you have squad options for extra weapons and squad leaders. Yes you get most of the characters too (not the special ones, the more generic ones). You can expect to have an imperial commisar execute a guardsmen in order to keep the rest of the troops in line. The armies are pretty accurate too, minus a few units but they're mostly all their! Each race has its own super unit: Marines: Land Raider, Guard: Baneblade, Orks: Squiggoth, Eldar: Avatar and Choas: Greater Daemon of Khorne. Last two have their own fight squence, daemon usually wins.

The game itself is probably the best RTS out atm. Animation is second to none, gotta love it when a dreadnought picks up a guy, squishes his head (complete with crunching noise) and tosses his corpse to the side. The game is really quick, all resources come from capture points so none of this harvesting crap. Balance wise - Eldar are the weakest (imo) but the rest are fairly even if you know how to play them. Each army plays very differently and they are all pretty unique. Some love hand to hand others love to shoot everything in sight, some fight in big mobs others in elite units so there's a big variation. Buy both DoW and Winter Assault (expansion) together for £25 - worth it!

I wish they would bring out a Tau expansion for dow, would make my day, Tau own the field with their rail cannons with 72" range, plus they have smart missiles 24" range which can attack anytarget in that range, even if they are behind walls or impossible to attack terrains (or so they say)

Me got tons of Tau in the shed ^^

anyway..., i play dow now and then got a good score atm, not as good as a m8 of mine, hes 37th in the one on one league

PK|Cerro
4th October 2005, 12:18 PM
Tau would be alot like the Guard i reckon - next races will be Tyranids, Necrons and possibly Tau.

Would like to get into a league but i'll need to practice abit first.

yeah my m8 taught me the way to play fast, basically

with space marines/chaos

get a builder then scout squad, have the scout squad cap all points around the base while the builders build 1 - 2 power gens plus barracks

have the scouts capture the relic while you build 2 squads plus the commander

always cap all points and upgrade them - more req income

build armoury
-----------------------------------------------------
upgrade hq

equip squads with weapons - Plasma best against marines, rockets for tanks etc

the best thing to do with chaos is to farm out defilers, because they rip into anything, or they did before recent patch release, not sure how that has effected that... but usually 10 defilers gurranteed you the game

dont forget to always upgrade up, and always get as many marines and vehicles as you can, with a decent eco you have more chance of success

after you practise that routine a few times you soon do it so quickly that you soon have troops position in place to attack enemy base

what ive found is one of the most entertaining methods, is to upgrade your squads with cloak ability, i sent 6 squads of cloaked chaos marines into a base while the bases marines were attacking my defilers, i suddenly uncloaked and ripped them to pieces, hehe - they ran back to their base with my defilers gunning them down sending them flying.

Prefer Space Marines in DoW before Imperial Guard came along anyway. That was pretty much how i played hexx except my force was - 3 terminator squads, librarian, 1 marine squad, land raider, predator, as many dreadnoughts as possible and a terminator assault squad with commander. Basically send this force anywhere, and when the fighting is thickest, active the lib's power to make my troops invulnerable to damage, 30secs of 20 invincible terminators and force commander (and in WA a chaplin too) is all thats needed to kill everything!

Shinedog and Faramir could go on for hours about DoW

Cerro do you remember that 3 hour long DoW game at the LAN? :D that rawked something horrid!

Ill buy it from amazon i reckon and practice up a bit

PK|Cerro
4th October 2005, 04:39 PM
Yeah i got it off amazon but i was buying other crap but play might be cheaper (get the double game pack so you get them both).

Ahhh those were the days - i missed the one with shinedog (he missed the last scotlan) but we did get a big one with some others. Think it was houston and the other guy who was next to him - whos name i forget.

DoW sounds pretty good, i might just have to get it along with WoW and BF2 =D... since i already have CSS working (PRAISE THE LORD) i'll get BF2 last...

Imperial guard have always been my favourite and i have a formidable sized Army consisting of lots and lots of vehicles and lots of heavy weapon squads :) (it wasnt the bloody catachan or mordian or cadian, i had a freaking mighty army of the ice warriors of valhalla! [shame they didnt put them in instead of cadian, it IS set in winter -ffs])

after that i have a Chaos Nurgle army, which - again doesnt seem to fit into the khorne theme that DoW obviously has.... man, with the 4th edition rules you get a nurgle rhino transporting guys 12", guys charging out with bolters then rapid firing 12" then when they get assulted in close combat you get anyone with 4strength needing a 4 to hit then 5 to wound!.... then my guys get their normal attack (charging or not), 1+1 for 2 close combat weapons (nurgle use bolters in close combat - unlike everyone but spacewolfs i think)... man that was freaking sweet... my friends stopped playing around 4th edition =P

PK|Solid_Snake
4th October 2005, 06:49 PM
i played it today and tbh it ownz the ass of DoW normal, the imperial is practically sure to win if u don't take them out within like 10 minutes, all i do is get 3 basilisks and tons of guardsmen, defend my base and shell the others until i get a banesblade then CHARGE!!!

edit: u cant "paint" the army u want so u could have the same colour but u cant get the same model, i suggest u wait for a mod with them to come out?

PK|Cerro
4th October 2005, 07:17 PM
Yeah snake, i kinda figured - 3 leman russ tanks, 1 baneblade, 2 basalisks, a hellhound and a sentinal along with 3 veteran guard squads, 2 ogryn squads and an HQ unit. pwns all tbh. Only trouble is the other races know you're going to do that and will do their damnest to make sure you dont have the time to build that sort of force up. The second you get baslisks they're in trouble and worse when you get the leman russ... nevermind the baneblade!

Ah the days ok 40K, had a huge army of Dark Angels - sadly my painting skills were crap at first so my early units looked crap. So i went back and repainted them. Still have them somewhere... I started a guard army but they only had the catachan plastics and the cadians came just as i stopped so the army never took off. I was going to buy the expensive metal stuff! Had the start of an ork army but i don't think i even painted them!

thats the only thing i hated about 40k, you go into a shop, and you come out with a few models and you've just emptied your bank account of 100 quid

so easy to spend £100 in games workshop, i think it is a bit overpriced, but when you have an army made they look oh so cool in battle, used to wipe the floor when tau first came out (had been in the school w40k club as a terrain builder - made some really good urban boards) then started getting some models when tau came out (they were new and i wanted them)

and yes, my painting skills on models was crap too, Space marines the easiest to paint in my mind,

PK|ReUsed
5th October 2005, 12:53 PM
that's why beginners always seem to go for space marines.

I was a bit lazy with my painting near the end of my 40k "career", but i was good enough to do it. nothing looked nicer than a fully painted ary on a nice board to impress your enemies.

I sucked at terrain (maybe you could post some tips hexx) so we ended up gaming in glasgow most of the time, since the boards there were exellent.

My friend had a Feral ork desert as his terrain, and OH MY FUCKING GOD, did he like to pile up the hills like a cowardly chaos bastard!. his army revolved around his chosen (close combat) the lord (close combat) and his other tactical squads (close combat).... he just drove up in his freaking rhinos and hid behind big rocks all the time....

but, surprise surprise, when my nurgle were fielded, he had a big shooty army and the scenery was conciderably less dense... Lmao, good times.

the 2 other friends that played Warhammer with us played tau and Dark eldar.. let me tell you, dark eldar are a band of homos, he flies 12" over anything, jumps out 2" and assults 6" in one turn from behind a big fucking rock...... Then some guy tells me that im "such a power gamer" when i field 10 Nurgle Terminators (roughly 550 pts, lord included) in a 1500pts game?

honestly, the people i played with were too obsessed with winning.

(maybe you could post some tips hexx)
.

basically, collect everything that you think may be of use, pens, cardboard boxes, toilet rolls etc

we had a wooden laundry basket which started rotting, so i cut that up, made some good wooden guard houses etc for jungle combat, used tons of flock on the roof made it over flow down the sides, then painted the wood rotting flesh mixed with dark eldar green, looked the tits

I have DoW somewhere

Graphics were good (specially the crunching people bit)
Biggest let down was lack of campains for the other 3 races

I never played 40k on boards, the whole scene is a bit too geek infested for me.

PK|Cerro
7th October 2005, 06:15 PM
it was rather geek infested, you got some real strange ppl playing that game - but alot of the guys were decent, especially at the tournaments.

I made tons of scenery - made myself an entire city at one point. Also got a grassy, MDF fold out tabletop which was a prefect gaming surface. Used felt off an old pool table top was brilliant. Made creators, burnt out buildings, an entire tank factory (complete with inside gantries which models could safely sit on) - i went scenery mad at one point. All because i couldn't afford more models. lol.

As for DoW Winter Assault lets you play the campaign as the forces of order (eldar and imperial guard) or disorder (chaos and orks). So you play as both and on the 2nd last mission you have to choose which side you play for (guard/eldar etc). Inevitbally you face the Necrons, who are dead hard - but a titan is more than able to blow them to bits!

i think that tbh the necrons in tabletop warhammer 40k are just a noobs team, really all they do is regenerate all the fucking time, try blowing them appart with an ordonance S 10 AP 2 and they'll just say
"ooh my lord has the ball of resurection, ill just magically roll all 4+'s and get them back up."
meh...

Lol!, snake you should just scream hacks!, and when you kill them all shout boom headshot ;-)

i agree there were quite a few nerds playing 40k at my school, me and a couple mates all started collecting tau and just wiped them out, tbh get a few Crisis Battle Suits with dual rail cannons and smart missiles longer range than any of there army, you get about 2 shots at them before they are in range, then you get the pathfinders which could deepstrike

pathfinders owned because you could target paint enemies and call for a missile, i forget the name of that...

i really need to start afresh with 40k but i cant be arsed, most of my units got destroyed in the great shelf collapse of 2003 :-(
