Sorry Dex, but im going to have to pass up your offer to help me build my own PC(for the time being). My parents want to buy me and Laptop for my birthday - which (yes, stfu) i decided to go along with...

The idea of a laptop is so it's easily transportable and things. Cause i've just started up college, I need something to use for work and stuff too... Either way, a new PC or Laptop is going to have much better specs than my current PC, which means i rig it up to a Keyboard and new mouse and viola! no fps lag.

what do you guys think and can you tell me the disadvantages of having it to a PC for online games?... please spare me the in depth reason why you'd like just that little bit more performance out of a machine and realise that this is a freebe for me and i've waited so long - oh so long - for a machine of my own. dont spoil my moment :bigcry:

right, soleft pointed out it'll have a shit graphics card.... how shit is shit, i mean.... it'll be better than something that came along with a 5-6 year old PC.... right?.... right?

please feel free to make an entirely compelling arguement for PC's, remembering that the whole idea for them getting me the laptop in the firstplace is for convenience. within the next week if you can sway me, i might beable to convince my parents?.. I know for the same sort of money the difference in specs can just be fucking stupid, but again, tbh - they're not doing this so i can have a 1337 machine. :bigcry:

i'd go with a PC tbh but... there are some decent graphics cards on laptops - plenty of 128mb cards on the go now and last year my mate got a laptop that runs doom3 smoothly (that was a year ago). Ok so it was a good laptop he got but by now that will be standard.

You won't get as much memory, a graphics card thats as fast or hard disks that are anywhere near as big but as a freebie, a laptop should easily run css.

If you get a good spec laptop reused then you will be ok.

The screen is the only issue since they are small. But if you can build yourself some sort of docking station (just a table with all the periferals of a PC, mouse, keyboard and Screen) and plug the laptop in then you wont know the difference.

*Dont* buy a laptop from a store!! They are old! And shite compared from what you can order online from Dell or Alienware. (Alienware make hardware for gamers and more importantly game developers so they are the shite).

There are some good mobile graphics cards. Get 128mb mem as a min.

Though for about 30-40% the price of a laptop you can get a better speced PC.

Though if you really want portability go with the laptop and configure it yourself online.

my dads laptop cost him just over a grand when he bought it new a year ago, even now it has better spec than most modern laptops, common probs with them is for the screen to loose pixels as in you get 2 pixels go out at once, one will go black the other will go white, they could be anywhere on the screen, but most laptops come with a warranty anywho. Also, little black thunder bugs or whatever you call them - in lincolnshire we call them thunderbugs and they love bright colours, mainly a prob after farmers combine the fields, my dad has had 2 of those buggers get stuck in the screen in between the screen and the protective cover.

Bastard for it tbh, As for Graphics his came with a decent card, think a 128mb Geforce somets or other, plays css doom 3 and everything with good fps better than the 5700LE series card ;-) just depends how much you pay really, the more the better

The definative response from Dex.

Does it need to be portable?

If yes, it's usually cheaper to go with a moderate spec lightweight laptop if you're serious about travel.

I needed a laptop for configuring routers etc, bought it 2002, its a dell inspiron 4100 (same as the C610), 1ghz p3, 256ram, 16meg card, lan/modem (rare for the time to have integrated nic and modem)

Runs fine, its one helluva word processor, ive run photoshop, max and solidworks on it, perfect for work

Keep in mind that you will pay through the ass for a gaming laptop, and to keep up to spec and run the latest games you'll end up buying a new laptop versus a usually more affordable addon for your desktop PC

alienware manufacture the most overpriced crap tbh

If you are serious about a laptop, get a dell gaming one, and take the extended warrenty (not that you'll need it with a dell) make sure your warrenty lasts for atleast 3 years

It's really upto you, i built my killer desktop system for under £700 (box only, no peripherals)

desktop pc's, well if you're confident, then build it yourself, i can help you with that if you wish, ballpark figure, you can get a gaming rig for under £1000 (which i might add is about the entry price for a moderate laptop, not a gaming one)

£1000 I think is a bit steep, I got my gaming beast for a meer £250 but I did get very lucky, I think you could build a great PC for £600 if you look in the right places, for example Ebay, I got mine from my bro, 3GZ processor (overclocks to 3.5) RAIDED HDDS(tho mine are wank they do the job) 64MB PCi Express card(sounds crap, mine can run any game I'v come across on top or near top graphics, 1 GIG RAM

I have used Alienware Dex and found them excellent. Own 2 Dell laptops 4150 & a 3000(workstation replacement) and have worked for Dell so know them inside out. Dell wont replace the screen unless you have at least 3 pixels not working. Or 2 white pixels.

I have speced high-end laptops on both Dells and Alienwares sites about 6 months ago and they were with a few euros off each other.

Went with Alienware as its sexy in its silver titanium.

I can try and help you too as I built most of mine, but Dex is probably much more knowledable than myself

My mums new(ish) laptop is a good spec one (laptop wise), but you wouldn't want to play games on it...it runs the sims and Unreal Tournament, anything it struggles. A good processor and ram doesn't make up for a radeon mobile graphics card, pick a good card and you'll be fine though, some laptops have x800's etc in them.

Hovis everything is PCI-X now and only RAID your disks if you've got SATA (or better yet SCSI) otherwise you're not gaining much (other than mirroring your data).

Alienware are overpriced imo, there are better gaming rig building companies out there. They will do what alienware do, only better - sound proof the case, overclock the system, watercooling etc etc. If you think alienware cases look good, the best gaming rig builders will actually design your own choice of case (basic case of your choice and then a hand painted/sprayed design) looks fucking awesome. Anyway, thats my 2cents of alienware... im not a massive fan as i could build and do what they do at a fraction of the price.

laptop - well as dex said if you want a gaming laptop they're expensive but if you only want to get it to run cs and the current crop of games and ain't too bothered about the future stuff then £1000 will get you a laptop capable of doing so. Weight of a laptop has never bothered me, hand carry most of the time and if you're walking for miles (god only knows why you'd need to do that with a laptop) a rucksack will do the job for that. It depends on your priorities reused, and what your parents are willing to give you... gaming and upgrading - PC, work and games (now only) - laptop, cheap and good for games -PC.

yeah you can get a great pc for 600 pounds, but for one hundred more you can have a better one, we go to computer fairs mostly when building computers because you generally get more for your money, spent about 200 pounds modifying my case, the rest the guts were only about 300 pounds but due to recent expensives spent on hard drives and now a graphics card, tbh the more money you put in the better the system, but it aint really needed at the moment, most games don't utilise the full capabilities of computers.

as for Me dads laptop, that was bought from Staples and hes had 3 of them under warranty, but

for a grand he got a 3.44 ghz processor, 1ghz memory, 128mb graphics card 40gb of hard drive space, bluetooth firewire, plus Xp Home edition and loads of software with it the screen is pretty big too kinda over laps the base of the unit

i'm sure there are plenty of people in here who can give you advice on building a rig. there's a few of us with degrees in computer techy stuff so help isnt far away.
so far as laptop graphics go, unless you get a top end lappy its likely to have graphics with shared memory - meaning it munches some of your main RAM for the graphics card. normally ok for 2d stuff but for 3d i'd avoid it like a big scary badger
