Regarding X-FI Drivers, there was a guy who done modded Creative drivers for Vista. Apparently they worked like they did on XP. However, I believe he got shut down.....no idea if the drivers made it into the wild.
I agree with Dex we need a Linux forum. The debate is good an all, but if it inspires people to make the 'leap of faith', then we should have a wee place to talk about and support it.
And some good news, managed to get the old blue box setup with the latest NVidia Drivers......AlbertoMilone FTFW!!
Anyone wishing to try Ubuntu and have an NVidia or ATI GPU(s), can install Ubuntu 8.04 via Wubi and then head out to http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
From here you should download EnvyNG.....
If you are running Ubuntu/Gnome, you will require EnvyNG-Core and EnvyNG-GTK.
1. Double click Core Deb file first and install - you may need to satisfy dependencies, I didn't!
2. Double click on GTK Deb file and install - same goes for this regarding dependencies. Again, I had no need.
Sidenote, if running Kubuntu, you'll also need the EnvyNG-QT file. (KDE Users)
(refer to Wiki link below for further details)
Next, run- Applications - System tools - EnvyNG
The rest is fairly intuitive, just select the correct option for you and away you go.
A system reboot is required after installation, and the Nvidia/ATI X Server control panel can be found under System - Administration - Nvidia/ATI X Server Control Panel.
If you have any problems following the above, or cannot sort any dependency issues or what have you, then there is a WIKI FAQ with step by step instructions on getting it to work and solving the caveats.

I hope this sorts anyone out. For those with earlier versions of Ubuntu, there is a legacy Envy installer available at the same site above as you will see.
Any probs/questions, just reply here.
Cheers
