Hypothetical Question time ...

In the UK serial killers are a bit of a rarity, but if 1 person starting murdering peadophiles

a) Would you condone & support thier activities ?
b) How bothered do you think the police would be (privately) ?
c) How much of a fuss would the media make about it ?

a) No, I don't believe in capital punishment, for even the most disgusting crimes, let alone vigilantism. I don't believe any person or state has the right to take the life of another, unless they are a current and direct threat.

b) Very bothered. Police are there to uphold the rule of law.

c) Are you kidding?? Murders and Kiddy Fiddling are their favourite subject, Rupert Murdochs head would explode he'd be so excited.

Hmmmm - I believe there is a film about this with Micheal Douglas in it. The moral issues of being a vigilante... can't remember it that well though.

Its hard to condone it because - where do you draw the line? I could support it if justice had failed - like when they get off on a technicality. But just knocking off known/convicted criminals?

I think the police would see it as a serious issue - both privately and publicly. However I think a lot of your average police officers would have their own private doubts about "should we really make an effort to catch him?"

It would be huge in the media - but I'd be interested to see what kind of reaction they'd present. Would they be for it, or against it? hard to say.

I think both Buckier and Cerro have 12 very valid points. On the one hand no-one should have the right to end life unless(and hugh said) they are an immediate or very direct treat. On the other hand, I couldn't blame a father for killing another man that had abused/killed is child and walked away from it.

The police would still be very bothered. if they let one vigilante get away with murder (no pun intended) then they would see vigilantism spiral out of control.

The media do love these kind of things. Every newspaper would carry the news on for months.
