Did your PC come with the sound built into the motherboard? You will need to enter the bios by pressing either F2 or Del. A message will briefly be displayed saying "press xxx to enter the BIOS" do this and you will then need to disable the on board sound. Have a look through the menus if you are not sure where to go or what to do, do NOT change any settings. Give me the model number of the motherboard and I will try and help you further :)

Thats the only thing I can think of if you have installed the drivers and windows detected the sound card etc :)

Are all your connections plugged in okay etc? :)

Don't think onboard sound would be the cause - i've got my onboard enabled along with my creative XFI, although its possible but not likely.

I suspect it will be a driver issue. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling? I'd also try and get the latest (stable) driver for the card off the internet - if you haven't already done so.

Check the device manager (right click my computer and click on manage, then select device manager from the list). Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" list and check for any exclamation marks against anything, do the same for "System Devices" - that will tell you if there are any conflicts with devices.

Turn off the onboard sound, lack of interrupts could be the cause, or the sound cards each requesting the same interrupt number :)

Try that first :)

Have you enabled the sound card as the primary device?

PK|Argaf

yeah what does it say in the bios sound settings ?

well if he has disabled the onboard sound then i suspect it would say "disabled" and that's it, not normally too much in the way of options...

If enabled/disabled doesn't seem to be doing anything and the sound stopped working before you installed the soundcard that suggests to me its some kind of driver conflict (but as you said, you uninstalled all the crap) or a fault on your motherboard.

Interesting, I take it that it was the onboard sound that stopped working which prompted you to go out and buy a seperate soundcard right? Out of interest, are you using the front panel sound jacks on your case or the ones at the back?

best way is to download CPU-Z, it will tell you your motherboard name and bios revision (as well as a shed load of other things about your hardware).

have you completely removed/uninstalled the onboard sound drivers?

PK|Vagina Patrol

I think so
ive de-activated the primary sound drivers
but im getting this message underneath the new hardware thing in the volume control settings :-

"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

If you go into control panel and go to add/remove programs, look down the list. the motherboard you use uses the realtek sound drivers. look for anything that says realtek ac97 (or something similar) and uninstall it. Thats what it sounds like to me.

Have you done:
Boot into BIOS-Advanced:
Disable the "Instant Music" (under chipset)
Disable the "Audio Codec Interface" (under chipset)
Disable the "Onboard Game Port" (under devices)
Disable the "Onboard Midi Port" (under devices)

Save changes and restart. See if windows detects the PCI sound card now.

If nothing changes, move your new sound card to a different PCI slot (preferably either the slot closet to your graphic card or the one furthest from the graphics card.

Hit it with a hammer, if you don't have a hammer... kick it (fixes everything)

on an asus, it's always the "Del" or "Delete" button. just turn the pc off and as soon as you press the power button, mash the delete button until you get the bios.

Maybe the new sound card is just duff. have you tried the new sound card in another PC?
