Because our government are total ass-holes who love tax VAT is added to most food stuffs. However its a pretty fucked up system, cakes are classed as a nessisity and therefore have no VAT but chocolate covered biscuits are counted as luxury items and have VAT added. So the taxmen decided to tax Jaffa cakes and took McVities to court after they argued over what a Jaffa cake is - a cake or a chocolate covered buiscuit. In the end McVities won because they baked a giant Jaffa Cake - so there is no VAT on Jaffa cakes!

The moral of the story is kids - buy Jaffa Cakes and not chocolate digestives, you can cheat the government out of some tax and make urself feel better at the sametime!
