View Full Version : Norway hosting

My work collegue has a 4meg fiber in his house, if the routing and pings check out, it will be much cheaper for us to colocate with him, he will upgrade his connection and we will supply the cost of the hardware and a smaller monthly rental charge
Since pings to europe can typically be the same as within the UK
i am going over his house tonight i will let you know what i think of it then :D
FYI he can go up to 50mbit each way, but i feel that 4mbit is more than enough to start with!

sounds good, but how will the speeds differ from our current servers? I thought 4Mbit sounded rather small for server hosting.... then again - i dont know shit about server hosting :P

Could we get an IP address so we can check latency, hops, ping time, etc.
Bearing in mind that ireland-->UK-->Norway is alot further to go for us Irish Clan members.

I thought ireland was on the right of UK?... jeez, NOW it makes sence that the highlands are in scotland!. I've been reading maps upside down my entire life!
maybe that was a little too sarcastic, lol Argaf, sorry if that was a little rude... Yeah, i'd like to check the ping for myself, cause sometimes in europian servers you get a constant sorta lag, that people do nothing but moan about.

titan has 8mb i think... but its holland and well, we don't want our server sinking!

i don't think our server sinking will be a big issue, just as long as we remember to keep the old server unlocked so people can go on and read that the hosting has changed this time!.
we lost loads of regulars switching to Jolt because our e-frag one was locked... If we do switch i suggest we put up a message in the server a month prior to the switch. (i know it's just really a possibility you're looking at depending on the price:quality)
TBH, i think it'd be awesome if the servers worked well and we were able to switch to an even more powerful server for the same sorta price.... or a similarly powerful server for less!

I dunno, France seems a bit far way....

When i said sinking - it was a reference to the fact that 90% of holland is below sea level... oh nevermind!

He can put his connection up to 50mbit, but looking at the current traffic 4mbit should be ample
I will get an IP *IF* he is interested because he is still thinking about it
also im looking at a dual Xeon 3ghz rig with 2gb of ram if you're after specs
spend £600 on the server and its ours
Why norway? Residential fiber, i can use my companies courier to get stuff over to norway for free too :D and i know the guy in real life, saves titan running off with the new server :D

17th November 2005, 08:07 PM
lol how very trusting of you... well if he's interested in doing it - then i can't seem any harm in doing a few tests and then buying a server (lets face it, £600 isn't much compared to a yearly server rental, we pay more for what we got already!)

Well his power costs and a little profit too, he would be happy with ~£40 a month for that!
PK|Cerro
18th November 2005, 01:06 AM
40 a month - jesus what we planning on running a 5Kw machine???
lol suppose thats reasonable.

Guys - IMHO
Have you tried playing on servers hosted in Norway - be it residential or isp based, I really doubt that this is a runner, latency will be too great.
At the moment most of the UK members have between 8-40 latency.
I get between 30-60 latency, by going to Norway you're likely to see much higher latency for all clan members. Admittedly it evens the playing field for all clans playing on the server (apart from Norway + North Europe based ones) - however a team of good players with avg latency of 20 vs a good team with latency of 60 will win all the time.

No harm in trying. I've played on French/German servers and i can still get a ping of 40-50. Germany is further than Norway...
Ping is not that much of a deciding factor if they are within a reasonable limit, having a higher ping can make you hard to hit due to the shitty css coding.

Then maybe the only option is the uber-s.... dig deep guys!
PK|Cerro
18th November 2005, 10:46 AM
yeah uber-s is fine with me... well as long as the clan can came up with half the funding per month to pay for it, im happy to pay a quarter of the total cost (although no doubt we will have to pay upfront). I'm not too keen on moving to it without enough members chipping in to cover half of it, otherwise it would be too expensive and atm we get 'just' enough to cover the current server.

take the risk, reinvest what we have, and aim for a special deal :D
PK|Argaf

I thought power wise 2 x uber > 1 x uber-s and that
cost wise 2 x uber < 1 x uber-s...
PK|Cerro

hmmm a possibility run one for publics and another to run two match server. Would also mean we get an extra TS server as well lol.
Could probably run: 18 slot public tick75 server & 2x 13 slot private tick75 servers.

Hmmm 4MB?
I have a 2MB connection myself so could I host a server? :D
PK|Cerro
18th November 2005, 07:02 PM
You could but it would be shite - you need a high upsteam due to the masses of ppl connecting and data that needs to be sent out!

I thought power wise 2 x uber > 1 x uber-s and that
cost wise 2 x uber < 1 x uber-s...
we need to ask jolt that question to be honest! If 2 ubers is better than one uber-s etc etc, i will ask the questio now
PK|Cerro
19th November 2005, 02:11 PM
they're bound to say uber-s as its their most expensive package! But i suppose its worth checking :D

They have offered me a free trial and i have accepted, im waiting to hear more

hmmm its fairly quick pinging (70ms) BUT I frequently lose packets to it:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms IP.dsl.in-addr.zen.co.uk [IP]
2 43 ms 45 ms 41 ms IP.dsl.in-addr.zen.co.uk [62.3.82.18]
3 46 ms 48 ms * IP.dsl.in-addr.zen.co.uk [62.3.80.161]
4 32 ms 31 ms 28 ms IP.dsl.in-addr.zen.co.uk [62.3.80.62]
5 * 82 ms * linx1.uk.sn.net [195.66.224.86]
6 * 87 ms 83 ms 213.225.109.246
7 83 ms 88 ms 93 ms 213.225.70.70
8 73 ms 78 ms 84 ms 213.167.114.137
9 68 ms 71 ms 76 ms 84.234.190.250
10 92 ms 105 ms 120 ms 81.166.114.174
11 93 ms 94 ms 92 ms 81.167.1.15
I dunno - could be abit iffy, especially for those in ireland. Argaf?

26th November 2005, 09:58 PM
Average ping is 67ms too, 13 hops, but since two of those are on my LAN, I guess it's the same as cerro :-)

2 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.254
3 19 ms 19 ms 19 ms b-ras1.srl.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.155.27]
4 20 ms 19 ms 19 ms ge0-3.edge2.srl.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.69.81]
5 20 ms 19 ms 24 ms 159.134.124.193
6 33 ms 34 ms 32 ms 83.71.112.90

is all that advance penis measuring with Rupert and Cameron or is it something similar that a mere boy wouldn't understand?

I dunno Dave, muppets like you would not understand such technical details (albeit very simple technical ones). Best to just bury your head back in the sand and keep the pointless, meaningless posts to a minimum eh?
